Plenty of desktops have no wireless at all, or an aging Wi-Fi 5 module that can't keep up with a modern router. Adding a PCIe Wi-Fi card or a quality USB adapter is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make, and it usually adds Bluetooth for controllers and headsets too.

We chose these cards and adapters on Wi-Fi generation, antenna design, Bluetooth support, Windows driver track record and brand reliability. Before you buy, check three things: what your router supports, what your Windows version supports, and whether you have a free PCIe slot. If your PC sits near the router, a cable may still beat any wireless card. See our Ethernet wiring guide at CompareInternet.

Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 6

Buy for your router, with a little future-proofing. A Wi-Fi 7 card works fine on an older router, just at that router's generation. If you're planning a router upgrade, see Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6E.

Best Wi-Fi 7 card

1. TP-Link Archer TBE550E (Wi-Fi 7)

$$

Best for: Desktops paired with a Wi-Fi 7 router

TP-Link's TBE550E is a PCIe Wi-Fi 7 card with Bluetooth 5.4, support for 320MHz channels on 6GHz and Multi-Link Operation, and a magnetic antenna base with multiple antennas. It's among the most widely available Wi-Fi 7 desktop cards. Remember that Wi-Fi 7 features need Windows 11 24H2 and a Wi-Fi 7 router.

What we like

  • Full Wi-Fi 7 with MLO and 320MHz
  • Bluetooth 5.4
  • Magnetic multi-antenna base

Watch out for

  • Wi-Fi 7 benefits need a Wi-Fi 7 router
  • Requires Windows 11 24H2 for Wi-Fi 7
Best premium Wi-Fi 7

2. ASUS PCE-BE92BT (Wi-Fi 7)

$$

Best for: ASUS router owners and enthusiasts

ASUS's Wi-Fi 7 card includes Bluetooth and a moveable antenna base, and pairs naturally with ASUS routers. It's a good alternative to the TP-Link, and occasionally the better deal. Check that your version includes the antenna base and Bluetooth cable.

What we like

  • Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth
  • Moveable antenna base
  • Pairs well with ASUS routers

Watch out for

  • Pricier than Wi-Fi 6E options
  • Same router and Windows requirements as other Wi-Fi 7 cards
Best value

3. TP-Link Archer TXE75E (Wi-Fi 6E)

$

Best for: Most desktops, especially with a 6E router or in busy apartments

Wi-Fi 6E is the value sweet spot: the 6GHz band avoids congestion in crowded buildings, and 6E routers are now common. The TXE75E adds Bluetooth and a magnetic antenna base at a lower price than Wi-Fi 7 cards. If your router isn't Wi-Fi 7, this gives you nearly everything you'll use.

What we like

  • 6GHz band for less interference
  • Bluetooth included
  • Excellent value

Watch out for

  • No Wi-Fi 7 features
  • 6GHz needs Windows 11
Best budget

4. Intel AX210-based PCIe card

$

Best for: Budget builds that want reliable Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth

Intel's AX210 chip is one of the most widely used and reliable Wi-Fi 6E chipsets, with excellent driver support in Windows and Linux. Several brands sell it on a PCIe adapter with antennas and a Bluetooth cable. Choose a well-reviewed seller. The chip is the same, but antenna and build quality vary.

What we like

  • Proven Intel chipset with strong drivers
  • Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth
  • Very affordable, Linux-friendly

Watch out for

  • Antenna and build quality vary by brand
  • No Wi-Fi 7
Best USB adapter

5. Netgear Nighthawk A8000 (Wi-Fi 6E USB)

$$

Best for: PCs you can't or don't want to open

The A8000 is a Wi-Fi 6E USB 3 adapter with a desk cradle, so you can lift it away from the case for better reception. It's a strong choice for prebuilts, small-form-factor PCs and anyone who'd rather not open the case. USB adapters generally trail PCIe cards slightly for stability and heat, but this is one of the better ones.

What we like

  • No case opening needed
  • Wi-Fi 6E support
  • Desk cradle for better placement

Watch out for

  • No Bluetooth
  • Bulky, and pricier than PCIe cards
Best budget USB

6. TP-Link Archer TX20U Plus (Wi-Fi 6 USB)

$

Best for: Quick fixes and older routers

An inexpensive Wi-Fi 6 USB adapter with a high-gain antenna and a USB extension base. It's a simple way to add solid wireless to a PC on a budget or when your router is Wi-Fi 6 or older.

What we like

  • Very affordable
  • Extension base for placement
  • Works with any router

Watch out for

  • No 6GHz band
  • Slower than PCIe 6E/7 cards

Windows requirements

This catches people out. 6GHz support (Wi-Fi 6E) generally needs Windows 11. Windows 10 doesn't support the 6GHz band on most cards. Wi-Fi 7 features need Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, which added Wi-Fi 7 support. Keep Windows updated and install the latest driver from the card maker or the chipset maker (often Intel, MediaTek or Qualcomm).

PCIe card or USB adapter?

PCIe cards are the better choice for a desktop. They get a direct, fast connection to the motherboard, run cooler and use external antennas on a magnetic base you can place for the best signal. Most also include Bluetooth through a small USB header cable. Connect it to a free internal USB 2.0 header on your motherboard.

USB adapters make sense when you don't have a free slot, use a small or prebuilt PC you don't want to open, or need to move the adapter between computers. Plug larger adapters into a rear USB 3 port, or use the included cradle to lift them away from the case for better signal.

Antenna placement: the free performance boost

The back of a metal PC case, under a desk, is one of the worst places for an antenna. Use the magnetic antenna base and put it on top of the desk or case with a clear line toward the router. Keep it away from monitors and metal. This alone can make a bigger difference than the card you choose.

Installing a PCIe Wi-Fi card

  1. Power down, unplug and open the case.
  2. Insert the card into a free PCIe x1 (or larger) slot and secure the bracket.
  3. Connect the Bluetooth USB cable to an internal USB 2.0 header, if the card has one.
  4. Attach the antennas, boot and install the latest driver from the card maker's support page.

Uninstall old Wi-Fi drivers first if you're replacing a card. Our build guide covers opening a case and working safely.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Windows 11 for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7?

For the 6GHz band (Wi-Fi 6E), Windows 11 is generally required. Wi-Fi 7 features need Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.

Is a PCIe Wi-Fi card better than a USB adapter?

Usually. PCIe cards have a direct connection, run cooler and use movable external antennas. USB adapters are best when you can't open the PC or have no free slot.

Will a Wi-Fi 7 card work with my older router?

Yes. It falls back to your router's standard. You'll only get Wi-Fi 7 features with a Wi-Fi 7 router.

Do Wi-Fi cards include Bluetooth?

Most PCIe cards include Bluetooth through a cable that connects to an internal USB header. Many USB Wi-Fi adapters don't include Bluetooth.

Is Wi-Fi good enough for gaming?

Modern Wi-Fi 6E and 7 can be very good, especially on the less-crowded 6GHz band. Ethernet is still the most consistent for competitive gaming if you can run a cable.
