How to Cable-Manage Your Desk
A step-by-step guide to clean desk cable management in 30 minutes — raceways, Velcro ties, clips, and labeling for a clutter-free workspace.
Before You Start
Cable management is a one-time setup that takes 30–45 minutes and makes a permanent difference. Before touching anything, take a photo of your current setup for reference, then unplug everything. Work with a clean desk — it's much easier to route cables when you can see the desk surface.
You'll need a few supplies: a J Channel cable raceway (or adhesive cable tray), Velcro ties, adhesive cable clips, and a label maker or colored tape. Total cost is typically under $25.
Step 1: Mount the Cable Tray
Attach a J Channel raceway or wire basket tray along the back edge of your desk, underneath. This is the backbone of your cable management — it hides the power strip and catches excess cable length. Screw-mount options are most secure; adhesive works on lighter loads but can loosen over time.
Step 2: Place Your Power Strip
Put your power strip inside the cable tray. If your tray doesn't hold a power strip, use an under-desk power strip mount bracket — these clamp or screw to the underside of the desk and hold the strip horizontally. Having power at desk level instead of on the floor eliminates most visible cables.
Step 3: Route and Bundle Cables
Plug in one device at a time. Run each cable along the tray to the power strip, using Velcro ties to bundle cables at natural junction points (where 2-3 cables run parallel). Coil excess cable length and tuck it into the tray. For cables that need to exit the tray — to reach a monitor arm, keyboard, or mouse — use adhesive cable clips to guide them along the desk edge.
Step 4: Label Everything
Label both ends of every cable. This sounds tedious, but the next time you need to unplug one specific cable from a bundle of eight, you'll be glad you did. Colored tape or a label maker both work. Group cables by device: "Monitor," "Dock," "Charger," etc.
Standing Desk Considerations
If you have a sit-stand desk, add a cable management spine — a flexible, segmented column that runs from the desk underside to a floor anchor. As the desk moves up and down, the spine extends and contracts to keep cables tidy. Without one, cables will pull tight at standing height or pool on the floor at sitting height.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I redo cable management?
Only when you add, remove, or rearrange devices. A well-done initial setup lasts years. The key is using Velcro ties instead of zip ties so you can make changes without starting over.
What about wireless peripherals — do they eliminate cable management?
Wireless keyboards, mice, and headsets reduce the number of cables but don't eliminate them. Your monitor, dock, power supply, and charging cables still need management. Wireless helps at the margins.
